Most emissions-related MOT failures ever
Motor vehicles have failed MOT tests in record numbers throughout 2020 due to DPF exhaust emissions faults and other emissions failures. A staggering 1.27 million vehicles failed due to emissions-related failures, including more diesel vehicles than ever before.
The data, unearthed from a Freedom of Information request to the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency), highlights more MOT failures during the past two years than in any previous two-year period.
The number of diesel vehicles which have failed MOTs due to diesel emissions issues has risen more than 230% in the two years up to 2020 – well over triple the number of emissions-related failures for the two years prior.
Diesel cars hardest hit due to DPF fails in emissions tests
New laws which state diesel cars must be equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) are the biggest reason for the huge increase in MOT test failures in 2020. DPFs became standard on all diesel cars from 2009 onward. Any vehicle equipped with a DPF will fail its MOT emissions test if there’s evidence of tampering with the DPF unit, or if smoke of any colour comes from the exhaust.
DPFs help to trap soot particles captured from exhaust emissions. In order to regenerate the DPF the trapped soot must be periodically burned off. Failure to clean the soot can cause a blockage and/or harmful smoke to appear. Thankfully, this can be fixed using our state-of-the-art DPF Flush Machines.
